Frequently Asked Questions

Application Specific FAQs

I am not a first-year student. Can I still apply to The GLOBE?

The GLOBE only has formal applications for incoming first-year students in the Schreyer Honors College. There is NO application for upperclass students – if you are an upperclass student, registration is on a first-come-first-served basis. Depending on your position on the waitlist, you will be allocated a room with the roommate of your choice. You may choose the special living option on eLiving. See below for contact information.*

I’m not in the Schreyer Honors College. Can I be in The GLOBE?

No. The GLOBE is an honors-specific Special Living Option. All GLOBE members are Schreyer Scholars.

I’ve never studied abroad or lived in another country. Do I have a chance at being in The GLOBE?

Yes. The GLOBE is for Scholars who are dedicated to building a global perspective. There is no requirement that they have demonstrated this dedication before applying. Many members have not yet studied abroad or left the county. By demonstrating your potential and yearning to think globally, you become a great candidate for The GLOBE.

Can I choose my roommate in the GLOBE?

Yes. You and your potential roommate must have an accepted GLOBE Housing Contract and request each other as roommates. When you self-select your room in March, you both select the same room or when one of you logs in and selects the room, it should pull the other person’s name into the room.

If I’m in the Honors College and my roommate is not, can we both apply to live together in the GLOBE?

No. The GLOBE is an honors-specific Special Living Option, however, you do not apply for the GLOBE through eLiving. New First-year Scholars apply through a special application process. They receive information regarding this process from the Schreyer Honors College following New Student Orientation. Upperclass Scholars must request and accept an honors housing contract through eLiving and then can add their name to the GLOBE Special Living Option Waitlist in eLiving when it opens. Contact the Housing Office Assignments Office for the date the waitlist list opens.*

I plan to be very involved in other things at Penn State. Will The GLOBE take up too much of my time?

No. Your time at Penn State is valuable, and you should spend it doing what you love as much as you can. The GLOBE can easily be one of the things you love. Many students are highly involved in both The GLOBE and other activities. Our members have served in UPUA, founded organizations, published research, competed nationally, studied abroad, completed multiple majors, and still have time to be active members of The GLOBE.

Room Specific FAQs

Are the rooms air-conditioned?

No.  The temperature in State College is only hot for the first week or two so this is usually not an issue.  If this is a concern, the hallways are air-conditioned so you could leave your door open. You may be interested in bringing a fan.

Do the beds have built-in risers?

Yes.  The beds are already raised significantly so students have plenty of storage space under their beds.  Underneath the beds are a couple of drawers, a small shelving space, and still more room yet.

Are the rooms carpeted?

No. The dorm rooms are tiled; however, the hallways and lounge space of the GLOBE are carpeted.
